Introduction to Gathering
Posted on October 9, 2010 | No CommentsGathering glass is one of the first hurdles a glass maker MUST get over. It can take anything from months to years to learn how to gather proficiently. -
Gathering for Feet
Posted on October 9, 2010 | No CommentsFrom the glass makers point of view, you want the foot gather to be ready and above your vessel or stem; hot, round and presented well enough to fall off efficiently. -
Standard Gathering
Posted on October 9, 2010 | No CommentsTo gather glass the glass maker lowers the iron until a reflection of the tip of the iron can be seen on the surface of the glass, then without turning the iron it is gently dipped into the glass until the required depth is achieved. -
Gathering for Stems
Posted on October 9, 2010 | No CommentsGathering stems is probably a more standard gather. Not usually necessary to get it as hot as a foot but none the less a very important gather that should never be taken for granted. -
Gathering to a point
Posted on October 9, 2010 | No CommentsAs before up until just before you come out of the glass, but instead of moving forward as you leave the surface of the glass you pull the iron back towards you gently. -
Post Gathers
Posted on October 9, 2010 | No CommentsSometimes it is necessary to gather up more than is possible on the iron you are using. This is when we use a ?Post Gather?.
